: INTENTION :
I’m dedicated and committed to teaching the Ashtanga Yoga method as taught to me by my teacher Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. This method was handed down to him by his Guru, one of the greatest yogis of our time. Sri T. Krishnamacharya. Together they discovered this ancient text called the Yoga Kurunta, authored by Vamana Rishi, while researching in a Calcutta Library. Pattabhi Jois was told by Krishnamacharya to make this method his life’s work. He has been teaching this method for over 60 years.
Ashtanga Yoga is now a system of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. The emphasis is on the sequencing and linking of breath and movement which helps to develop concentration, heat, flexibility and strength. This practice can be used to enhance health and fitness but ultimately its goals go far beyond that. The purpose of Ashtanga Yoga and all yoga is to go within, to be fully present here and now and in doing so remove the obstacles that block us from realizing the true nature of our higher selves.
When the teacher feels that the student is ready to progress the student will be taught the next posture in the sequence. The benefits of a Mysore class are that the student receives one on one tuition where necessary and as they advance they are able to develop independence from the teacher.
Also students learn at a pace that is suitable for them and don’t need to keep up with others in the class. This benefits both beginners – who need more attention and advanced practitioners – who have the potential to go further.
There are 6 series in the Ashtanga Yoga method.
The Primary Sequence is called “Yoga Chikitsa and is designed to re-align the body.
The Intermediate Sequence is called “Nadi Shodana” is designed to purify the nervous system.
The four Advanced Sequences are known as “Shtira Bhaga” and develop greater levels of strength, grace and humility
Practiced correctly this method has the potential to help you rediscover your fullest potential on all levels of human consciousness. However it must be approached slowly, with patience, discipline and devotion in order for the true benefits to be revealed
